How Often Should You Scoop Dog Poop in Your Yard?

A dog owner relaxing in a clean grassy yard

If you have one dog, you might get away with a weekly scoop. Add a second dog, summer heat, or a smaller yard, and the math changes fast. Here’s how to think about it.

Start with how many dogs you have

A single small dog produces a manageable amount of waste, and a weekly visit usually keeps the yard clean and the smell down. Two or more dogs, or a large breed, can double or triple what builds up between visits. For most multi-dog homes, twice a week is the sweet spot.

Factor in your climate

Heat speeds everything up. In hot, dry places like Arizona and Nevada, waste dries out and odor spikes, so more frequent visits keep things pleasant. In cooler, wetter climates, waste breaks down differently but can get tracked around more. Either way, a consistent schedule beats letting it pile up.

Think about how you use the yard

Kids and bare feet? Hosting friends? A dog that likes to roll in the grass? The more you actually live in your yard, the more a clean, predictable schedule pays off.

Our simple rule of thumb

  • 1 dog: weekly is plenty for most yards
  • 2+ dogs or a big yard: twice a week
  • Tight space or lots of outdoor time: twice a week, plus deodorizer in summer

Not sure? Start weekly. It’s easy to bump up to twice a week if you want, and there are no contracts, so you’re never locked in.
